Pray, Fast, Give: Lent 2020 at the University of Dayton

University of Dayton Campus Ministry encourages all to "Pray, Fast and Give during Lent," which begins Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26. Lent is the period during which Christians prepare for Easter with prayer, abstinence and repentance, similar to Jesus' fasting in the desert.

"Lent can be a time to deepen your relationship with God through prayer and other spiritual practices, to attend Mass/worship more regularly, or to engage in acts of generosity and service that benefit others," said Crystal Sullivan, University of Dayton executive director of campus ministry.

The University of Dayton will mark the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Masses at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, 7:30 a.m. in Curran Place, 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Church, and 9 p.m. at the Marycrest and Marianist Hall chapels. Liturgy of the Word with distribution of ashes will also be available at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and noon at Curran Place. A nondenominational Christian worship service with distribution of ashes will take place in the Kennedy Union ballroom at 5 p.m.

In addition to Ash Wednesday Masses, University of Dayton Campus Ministry will offer the following free, public activities during Lent, which runs through Wednesday, April 8.

  • Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28, March 6, March 13, March 20 and April 3 in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Romero Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:30 p.m. March 27; these will begin in the Nazareth Courtyard outside St. Joseph Hall and take place outdoors.
  • During Lent, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Thursdays,  and Fridays, 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception (there will be no confession March 17-19 because of spring break). There also will be a communal reconciliation service with individual confession and Taize music at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Taizé refers to the reflective music style of the monks of Taizé, France.
  • Liturgy of the Hours will be prayed at vespers (evening prayer) at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday throughout Lent in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception beginning March 4 until April 1, with bilingual prayer (English and Spanish) on April 1.
  • Exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. Fridays during Lent (except for the week of March 16-20 because of spring break).
  • Candlelight Mass in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at 8:30 p.m. March 29.

This Lenten season, Campus Ministry and the Office for Mission and Rector also will be collecting money to send to Marianist programs overseas — health clinics in Togo, West Africa and India; and Marianist schools in India, Kenya and Malawi. A second collection will take place at all masses on March 29. Each serves the needs of the poor through education, encouragement and meeting basic needs.
