President Spina message about shooting in Oregon District

The University of Dayton expresses its profound grief and sadness about the horrific shooting in the city's Oregon District. As a Catholic, Marianist community, we offer our prayers for the families and loved ones of the victims and the wounded, both for our friends and neighbors here in Dayton and in El Paso, Texas.

We also offer our prayers and gratitude to the courageous first responders whose swift action saved many lives.

We specifically pray that Mary the Mother of Sorrows bring solace and consolation to all who grieve and that the Prince of Peace restore a sense of safety and bring love to our city.

We urge our elected leaders at the state and federal level to take steps to address the plague of gun violence that continues to claim innocent victims across the country and now has come to our beloved City.

We have no information at this time that anyone in the University of Dayton family was affected, but will provide updates if we learn more.

The Dayton community came together earlier this year to support those affected by the tornadoes and will bring that same strength, compassion and commitment to the common good to this tragedy.

May God's grace be with all of us, as we pray for healing and comfort for all those affected.
