Dia de los Muertos

rec3_dia_de_los_muertos_pictures_2019_5.png

This Fall, Campus Ministry is continuing our celebration of Día de los Muertos and November, the month of remembrance, with several traditional altars throughout campus. The Altar de Ofrenda is a Mexican tradition that serves to remember, celebrate, and pray for our beloved dead. These are often found in churches, homes, and cemeteries, and feature many elements such as photographs, personal effects, favorite foods and drinks, candles, incense, and flowers. Each element is meant to guide the spirit of the loved one, and to serve as an offering.

From October 19th - November 13th, altars will be in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, the Adele Center, Campus South, the Multi-Ethnic Engagement, and Education Center (MEC), and residence halls chapels in Marycrest, Marianist, Founders, Stuart, and VWK. We are encouraging all members of the UD community to participate by submitting photographs of family members or friends who have died. You can submit a picture here or photographs may be dropped off at the altar of choice or at the main office in Liberty Hall. Other activities:

  • You can learn more about Dia de los Muertos.
  • Dia de Los Muertos Spoken Word, Submissions accepted October 19 – November 10, Online
This year we are giving students the opportunity to honor their loved ones and those we have lost this year with words, songs, and poetry. Please submit a video of your work through this google form
  • Evening of Reflection, October 29th, 8:30pm to 9:45pm, Zoom
This event is a time for students to "gather" together and learn more about the celebration of life known as the Day of the Dead. Students will be able to pick up supplies to join in a painting of a calavera (skull) as well! You can register here

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!

This year Campus Ministry-Center for Social Concern will be conducting the drive virtually. We are partnering with The Foodbank, asking our faculty, staff and students to make monetary donations at The Foodbank site. Make sure that in the section “How Did You Hear About the Foodbank?” you select University of Dayton Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!

What's Your Story?

Campus Ministry's Christian Leadership, Vocation and Retreats team has launched a new podcast, "Sacred Stories". This bi-weekly podcast will engage a member of the UD community to share an excerpt from a sacred text and how an experience from their life intersects or parallels that text.

The Stories of Our Lives

We should not let it be said that George Floyd died for no reason. We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our commitment to fulfill our nation’s sacred promise — to be a beloved community of life, liberty, and equality for all.

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Mary During Coronavirus Pandemic

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
