A Vision of Art and Faith

The Litany of Loreto and the Work of Ezio Anichini (1886-1948)

This exhibit explores the complex legacy of Italian artist Ezio Anichini, whose expansive career bridged the art nouveau style of the early 20th century and the nationalistic propaganda of the World War I era through the rise of the fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Throughout his work are recurring figures, in particular the Virgin Mary of the Litany of Loreto. Anichini also contributed illustrations for numerous children's books by authors such as Laura Orvieto and Emma Perodi; popular magazines; Red Cross publications; and Dante's Divine Comedy.

This exhibit, which draws on the private collection and independent research of John A. Shaffer,  will demonstrate how themes recur over Anichini's professional life, with particular reference to Anichini's illustrations of the Virgin Mary and allegorical female figures as symbols for national identity.

The exhibit also will include two acclaimed works on loan from the Royal School of Needlework in London — intricately embroidered reproductions of Anichini illustrations in gold thread, filoselle and fine floss.
