A Living Library: Marian Acquisitions Through 2022

Sept. 6 – Oct. 28, 2022

Marian Library Gallery, seventh floor of Roesch Library
Free and open to the public

This exhibit showcases a selection of items acquired in the past five years for the Marian Library’s rare book, art and archival collections, including their use on campus and beyond. Highlights include Ethiopian manuscripts with psalms and prayers to Mary; an illuminated medieval Book of Hours donated by Stuart and Mimi Rose; and an 18th-century printed amulet scroll that purports to represent the “true length” of Mary’s height; scrolls such as this could be placed upon or wrapped around the sick for healing or the dead for protection.

These and other items illustrate the Marian Library’s Latin motto “De Maria numquam satis” —  “Never enough about Mary” — with a behind-the-scenes look at the labor, expertise and relationship-building that give these one-of-a-kind materials life and longevity for UD students and faculty — and for researchers around the world.
