Research Visits in the Marian Library

The Marian Library welcomes visitors, including those with no University of Dayton affiliation. We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.

We are closed to walk-in visitors on Thursdays (appointments with faculty and staff may be scheduled at their discretion and must be made at least 48 hours in advance). We are closed to all visitors on weekends and major holidays.

Using Library Materials

Can I borrow books and materials?

  • Books and materials that are available for circulation can be checked out by University of Dayton students, faculty and staff, as well as eligible borrowers with a courtesy card.
  • If you are a visitor with no University of Dayton ID or courtesy card, you may use these books and materials in the seventh-floor reading room.

When should I schedule an appointment to use materials?

  • If you plan to use materials such as art, archival collections and rare books.
  • If you are a visitor with no University of Dayton ID or courtesy card and would like to use books and materials in the seventh-floor reading room an appointment is strongly encouraged.
  • If you are planning to visit from out of town, contact the Marian Library in advance to ensure that the materials and personnel are available. When you alert us to your visit, please also provide a list of materials you hope to consult.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Using Library Computers

  • Two visitor computers that provide access to research databases are located in the seventh-floor reading room.
  • Two additional visitor computers are available on the first floor of Roesch Library at accessible locations with height-adjustable desks.
  • Due to licensing agreements, University of Dayton Libraries cannot provide off-campus access to research databases to individuals without a UD login.

Wi-Fi for Guests and Visitors

Open wireless internet access is available to guests at the University of Dayton.

Printing, Scanning and Copying

Personal Devices

  • The use of phones, tablets and cameras for note-taking purposes, as long as library materials are not damaged in the process, is welcome. Camera flash and portable scanners that come into contact with the materials (e.g., flatbed scanners) are not permitted.
  • The library can provide book weights, cradles and other supports to facilitate safely photographing materials in the reading room upon request.

Overhead Scanner

  • Located in the seventh-floor reading room, this scanner is available for patron use.
  • We recommend bringing a USB drive to save your scans. A vending machine that sells USB drives is located on the first floor of Roesch Library.

Multi-function Devices

  • FlyerPrint devices offer pay-for-print service, copying and scanning for the UD community. To print to a FlyerPrint device, add a FlyerPrint print queue to your device. There are two FlyerPrint devices on the first floor across from Information Point.
  • Visitor printing and copying is not available in the Marian Library or in Roesch Library. We suggest using campus Print and Copy Services.
