Hands-on learning matters

Hands-on learning matters

Students in Basic Video Production (CMM 342) are getting hands-on experience with studio cameras and lighting equipment while on location on campus this semester. As the second part of the course begins, they are learning how to work with field cameras.

Their next assignment involves executing various shots of randomly assigned objects around campus. Each student was given a moving and stationary object to film by their instructor, Roland Flynn, such as "students walking up and down Stuart Hill" or "the exterior of Founders Hall," he suggested.

Having an understanding of camera and tripod functions, as well as being able to think creatively will set students up for success in this assignment and in any media field they want to pursue after graduation. Media production and communication students are seeing the value in opportunities for hands-on learning like this without even leaving campus.
