Flocking together

Flocking together

Larry Burgess November 09, 2022

Science and nature tell us there is safety in numbers. Animals stick together in a herd for protection. A classic example of this happened recently in the late afternoon above VWK Residence Hall, where a flock of starlings formed in the sky. The birds twisted, turned and swirled into a variety of shapes — one of which took on the form of a heart. Experts say this activity happens around the birds’ communal roosting sites during the colder months from October through March. Maybe they, too, just wanted to feel part of a community.
