Season of pumpkins

I am an international student from India. When I started spotting pumpkins on the front porches of UD houses in the student neighborhood, I got curious. Halloween is not a huge thing where I come from. So I started doing a little reading about the tradition.

The history of jack-o-lanterns dates back to an Irish myth about "Stingy Jack," a demonic mythical character. People used to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away Jack’s wandering soul. When Irish immigrants arrived in the U.S., they started carving jack-o-lanterns out of pumpkins, as they are native to the Americas.

Even though they are a little scary when we carve faces into them and set them aglow, they are also very good to eat as they are high in fiber and beta carotene. And I hear you can make pie from pumpkin. I might have to try that.
