Happy Swiss Independence Day

Today, Switzerland was founded 727 years ago in 1291. Festivals are held, bonfires are lit on mountain tops, and fireworks blast off to the sky from the valleys. Father Johann Roten, from Berne, Switzerland, and of The Marian Library in Roesch Library, remembers participating in the celebrations as a resident there. Today, at his office door, he stands beside a painting by an artist professor friend, done when they were both working at a Swiss academy. The painting depicts a Swiss soldier playing the flute, in red and white, the colors of the Swiss flag.
