Dayton Divests

The University of Dayton announced it will begin divesting coal and fossil fuels from its $670 million investment pool. It is believed to be the first Catholic university in the nation to take this step.

Jonathon C. Lee '10 and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed daughter, Madelyn Clay, in March 2014. Madelyn joined sister, Isabella Grace, born in February 2011, at the family home in Harlan, Ky.

In Memoriam

Andrew Z. Arnett '11, age 27 of Dayton, died June 1. Arnett received a bachelor's from the University of Dayton, a degree in law from the University of Dayton Law School, and a L.L.M. from Georgetown University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi Business Honors, Beta Alpha Psi Accounting and Financial Honors and also the Dayton and New York Bar Association. Arnett recently started the AZA Law Firm.

Keith J. "Yogi" Brown '81 died June 3. Brown worked for nearly 20 years for the Montgomery County Public Defenders Office in Dayton, representing indigent defendants at all levels of appeals. Brown then entered private practice for another decade before moving to Indianapolis where he pursued public health degrees to be an advocate for seniors. 

Olga Gmoser '92 died May 10.  Gmoser worked for Ohio Casualty in Hamilton, Ohio, before becoming a court stenographer for Butler County, Ohio, Common Pleas Court. After graduating from Dayton Law, she worked in a family law practice for nearly a decade with her husband, Michael, also in Hamilton, before she retired and traveled the world.

Teresa Jones '88 died May 29 after a six year battle with cancer. Jones, who had a diverse and adventurous lifegraduated cum laude from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1988 and became an associate with the law firm of Smith & Schnacke (now Thompson Hine). She retired in 2013 as a partner and the head of the Labor and Employment group in the firm's Dayton office. Jones was named to the "Best Lawyers in America" list for five years in a row. She also gave generously of her time, serving on the boards of Eastway Corporation, the Boy Scouts of America, the Dayton Red Cross, and Artemis House. In addition, Jones was legal counsel for the AIDS Resource Center and Make a Wish Foundation. 

Glenn A. Shinaberry '11, age 29, of Knoxville, Tenn., died in an automobile accident on May 25. Shinaberry was a 2007 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was sports editor of the college newspaper, The Daily Beacon, and received his law degree in 2011 from University of Dayton School of Law. Shinaberry was an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for the 7th Judicial District, Clinton, Tennessee.

Susan Brenner spoke at the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Summer Conference, held in Dayton, Ohio. Brenner presented, "Cybercrime: Selected Fourth and Fifth Amendment Issues," which focused on how the use of digital technology can make the application of the Fourth and Fifth Amendment problematic in ways that require courts to develop new approaches to implementing old rules.

Professor Emeritus Vernellia Randall presented "Dying While Black: Why the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is Inadequate for 21st Century Discrimination" at the 12th Annual Disparities in Health in America, in Houston. Several hundred students and graduate students were in attendance. Randall was part of the presenting panel with Dr. Cynthia M. Jones, Dr. Janice A. Chilton and Dr. Colin L. Soskolne.

Kessler Golf Outing

25th annual Kessler Golf Outing - The 25th Annual Honorable Carl D. Kessler Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 19, 2014.

36th annual Dean's Classic Softball Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 21. The co-ed, double-elimination Dean’s Classic Softball Tournament provides an opportunity for University of Dayton law students and alumni to build relationships in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.
