Still Time to Register for Alumni Weekend

The School of Law is accepting last-minute registrations for the 2011 Alumni Weekend, slated to take place Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14.

To register or for more information, contact the External Relations Office at 937-229-3793 or by e-mail.

Online registration is also available.

Alumni Weekend will begin on May 13 at noon with the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon at the Schuster Center in downtown Dayton. We will honor as our Distinguished Alumnus Terry Miller '77, the general counsel of the London 2012 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympics Games, and as Honorary Alumnus Helenka Marculewicz, the executive director of the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Alumni are also invited to participate in a special fundraiser, Get Behind the Bar, coordinated by the Dayton Bar Association's Young Lawyers' Division. The casual happy hour take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 13 at Brixx Ice Company, 500 East First Street in downtown Dayton.

The event is a fundraiser for 5 for the Kids, an annual 5K run and fitness walk for CARE House, a Dayton shelter for abused and neglected children.

The weekend continues on May 14 with a CLE program and a community service project.

The 3-hour CLE Program will be held from 8 a.m. to noon in Keller Hall. The program includes three presentations by Dayton Law Professors:

  • Professor James Durham: "Can I Do That There? The Pitfalls of Multijurisdictional Practice of Law"
  • Professor Rebecca Cochran: "Law Students, Lawyers and Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession"
  • Professor Sam Han: "Are the Offspring of Harvard Mice the Product of Unprotected Sex?"

Alumni also can volunteer at Daybreak, a Dayton shelter for homeless and runaway youth, on May 14. Volunteers may stop by Daybreak any time between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Daybreak is located at 605 South Patterson Boulevard. Please keep in mind that this project does not have a "rain-date" plan, so volunteers should dress according to the weather.

The weekend concludes with class receptions on May 14, 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m., in Keller Hall. Childcare will be provided for children two and older.

A silent auction benefiting the Volunteer Student Law Project will be held concurrently with the reception and dinner. The auction is a great way to help students doing pro bono work.
