The recipients of the Professor of the Year Awards were announced during the Barrister¿s Ball on January 29. Eric Chaffee was named Professor of the Year by upper-level students, and Blake Watson was recognized as the Professor of the Year by first-year students.
Assistant Professor Thaddeus Hoffmeister is quoted in a January 19 Reuters story, "Juror could face charges for online research," examining the struggle of courts nationwide to prevent jurors from going online during trials.
Hoffmeister also appeared on Dayton¿s ¿Fox 45 in the Morning¿ show on January 26 to discuss the Ryan Widmer murder trial.
Professor Andrea Seielstad was recently elected vice president of the University of Dayton¿s Academic Senate.
Four faculty members gave presentations on their law review articles during the January 13 meeting of the Dayton Intellectual Property Law Association. Sam Han discussed "Daubert v. Markman: Fact Experts on Issues that are Wholly Devoid of Any Factual Component"; Monique Lampke presented "Fair Use Defense of Free Speech or Parody and the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act"; Tracy Reilly discussed "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors: The German Supreme Court Rules on Digital Sampling of Sound Recordings"; and Julie Zink presented "Shifting the Burden: Proving Infringement and Damages in Patent Cases Involving Inconsistent Manufacturing Techniques."
Paul Venard, assistant professor and reference librarian, reviewed The Supportive State by Maxine Eichner on the AALL Spectrum blog, published by the American Association of Law Libraries. He describes the book as an "excellent read for anyone interested in political theory, public policy/social justice or family law."
Adjunct Professor James Brogan retired at the end of January after serving for 30 years on the Second District Court of Appeals. Prior to being elected to the court, he served as a prosecuting attorney in Montgomery County. He recently was profiled by the Dayton Daily News.
Charles J. Faruki, chairman of the Dayton Law Advisory Council, was selected again as one of the top 10 attorneys in Ohio in the 2011 edition of Ohio Super Lawyers magazine. Faruki, a trial lawyer with a focus on business litigation, is one of the founders of Faruki Ireland & Cox and a past president of the Dayton Bar Association.
