LL.M. & M.S.L. Certificates:

  • Allow students to develop their skills and knowledge in a specific area of law without requiring additional time or tuition.
  • Make students more marketable to employers by providing a credential attesting to their competency, commitment and training.
  • Ensure that students receive recognition for the successful completion of a specialized course of study. 
  • Provide students with a road map for curriculum planning.

How to Earn a Certificate

Certificates are awarded only when a candidate successfully completes the requirements for the degree sought.

LL.M. Core Courses

All LL.M. candidates must take at least four (4) of the following core courses:

Applied Business Law Certificate (On Campus Only)

Applied Business Law explores the application of business law to real-world business decisions. Topics covered include alternative dispute resolution, business lifecycle management, business organizations, income tax, employment law, and secured transactions. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be equipped with the legal and business skills necessary to work effectively with entrepreneurs and business entities.

To earn a certificate, students must satisfy all requirements for the LL.M. or M.S.L. and successfully complete the required Business Organizations course. Electives (totaling 9 to 15 credits) required to complete the degree must be selected from the list below. Students who successfully complete the required and elective courses from the certificate’s specified curriculum, achieving a cumulative certificate GPA of 3.0, will be eligible to receive the certificate.

Criminal Law Certificate (On Campus Only)

Criminal Law regulates conduct that society as a whole considers so harmful that it is prohibited, prosecuted, and punished. Students pursuing this certificate will learn the basics of criminal law and procedure and will also explore advanced topics such as white collar crime and trial advocacy. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be prepared to succeed as criminal law practitioners or policymakers.

To earn a certificate, students must satisfy all requirements for the LL.M. or M.S.L. and successfully complete the required Criminal Law course. Electives (totaling 9 to 15 credits) required to complete the degree must be selected from the list below. Cyberlaw Certificate (On Campus Only)

Cyberlaw examines the legal issues that arise when a computer or the Internet is used to communicate or exchange information. Topics covered include cybercrimes, cybersecurity, cyberterrorism, cyberwar, digital privacy, electronic publishing, online mediation, social media, video gaming, and virtual legal services. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be well prepared to address legal problems raised by the increased use of technology in a global society.

Government Contracting and Procurement Certificate (M.S.L. Only, Available Online)

Government Contracting and Procurement careers require purchasing and contractual negotiation and drafting skills. Students pursuing this certificate will learn the art of high-stakes negotiations and will acquire the skills that lawyers use to draft contracts. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be prepared to resolve business disputes and manage large procurement projects.

GOVERNMENT CONTRACTING AND PROCUREMENT CERTIFICATE COURSE REQUIREMENTS

To earn a certificate in Government Contracting and Procurement (GCP), students must complete the following courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Intellectual Property Law Certificate (On Campus Only)

Intellectual Property Law  explores the legal issues relating to the representation of clients in the field of intellectual property, which includes the areas of patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret law, and media and entertainment law. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be well prepared to address legal issues involving the encouragement, protection, and exploitation of  innovation, technology, creativity, and resulting intellectual property assets.

Social Justice Law Certificate (On Campus Only)

Social Justice Law explores how law and advocacy can be used to restructure social norms in ways designed to ensure fair and just treatment for poor and marginalized groups. Students pursuing this certificate will gain an in-depth understanding of how to use law as an instrument for positive social change. Topics covered include civil rights, constitutional law, disability rights, elder law, human rights, immigration and international law. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be prepared for a wide range of roles as change agents and advocates for social justice in a variety of nonprofit, government and private settings.

United States Legal Practice Certificate (Available Online)

The Certificate is designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the fundamental terms, rules, and principles of American Law as well as the structures, processes, and procedures of the American legal system. It is further intended to help students develop the issue-spotting, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills needed to pass the bar examination. In addition, the certificate program is designed to help students develop and demonstrate competency in the skills needed in United States legal practice, including legal research skills and identification and resolution of ethical and other professional dilemmas. The Certificate in United States Legal Practice will be offered in an asynchronous entirely online format. In limited cases, students may also be allowed to apply on-campus coursework or transfer credit towards the United States Legal Practice certificate. However, transfer credits may impact potential bar eligibility for LL.M. students. It is the responsibility of LL.M. candidates to explore bar eligibility requirements and the potential impact of transfer credit on that eligibility.

United States Legal Practice Certificate Course Requirements

To earn a certificate in United States Legal Practice, students must complete the required and core courses for the LL.M. degree in American & Transnational Law and the required United States Legal Practice courses from the list below. Students who successfully complete these courses, within three years of matriculation and achieve a cumulative certificate GPA of 3.0, will be eligible to receive the certificate.
