The School of Law has partnered with the Dayton Bar Association to celebrate the First Monday in October, which marks the beginning of the United States Supreme Court's term. The purpose of the celebration is to increase awareness among students, attorneys and the public about the Supreme Court's significance.
Please join us in the Mathias H. Heck Courtroom at the University of Dayton School of Law on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Professor Jeff Schmitt will discuss Justice John McLean. McLean who is from the Dayton area, served on the Ohio Supreme Court (where he ruled that any slave brought temporarily into Ohio would be made free), the Supreme Court from 1829-1861 (where he dissented in virtually every pro-slavery cases, including Dred Scott), and received significant support for the Republican Presidential ticket in 1860.
