All About Mary
University of Dayton Rosary
As an enduring token of gratitude, the University of Dayton awards benefactors and special contributors with the University of Dayton Rosary. The symbols crafted into specially designed rosary hold significant meaning for alumni and friends of the University of Dayton. The satin finish beads are UD blue on an elegantly simple chain. Notice the ends of the beams on the crucifix. They resemble those on the cross of the dome of Immaculate Conception Chapel. The center medallion reveals an image of the statue of the Immaculate Conception which is located between St. Mary’s Hall and the Roesch Library. Standing on a granite column and pedestal, the sculpture, with a welcoming and protective gesture, was a gift from UD students in 1904. It commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Turn the medallion over to admire the skillfully engraved cross of the Society of Mary. The cross, with the stylized M for Mary, is framed by the inscription, “University of Dayton.”
May those who receive this rosary treasure it as a tangible representation of UD’s deep appreciation and as an invitation to pray it in the intentions of this University.
