Training AI model to detect errors at earlier stages in silicon crystal growth

Tam Nguyen, assistant professor of computer science, and Pengfei Guo, who received his doctorate in electro-optics in 2018 under the guidance of Professor Andrew Sarangan, received a grant through Lam Research Corporation's Unlock Ideas university grant program, which provides seed funding for research collaborations with professors to support feasibility testing of innovative ideas.

2019 Book Published: LiDAR by Paul McManamon

Dr. Paul McManamon, Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics at the University of Dayton, published a new book: LiDAR Technologies and Systems. This extensive work is coming out at a critical time in the development of LiDAR technology. LiDAR has been used extensively for defense applications in the past. In the late 90s, it started to be used for commercial 3D mapping. Today, it is a critical sensor for autonomous vehicles, with almost 100 companies working on auto LiDAR. Using the book's digital version, Drs. McManamon and Watson offered a week-long short course during the summer. An attractive short course in EOP for several years, people from across the country as well as our EOP student take it. Dr. McManamon is a fellow of many professional societies, including OSA, SPIE, IEEE and AFRL.
