ECHO

Students participate in the ECHO Peacemakers groupThe Empowering Children with Hope and Opportunity program (ECHO) is a partnership between the University of Dayton Center for Catholic Education and local Catholic schools.

The program aids teachers and administrators in helping children overcome obstacles to learning — such as poverty, exposure to addiction, violence, discrimination, separation or physical and sexual abuse.

Because ECHO staff work with students every day in their schools, they gain valuable insights, build relationships with children and families, and can effectively provide counseling services. Our primary goal is to establish and support a healthy learning environment in each classroom so that children are unencumbered by the stresses of everyday life and are able to focus and learn. We envision positive outcomes for students and families.

The importance of ECHO

Today, our children are bombarded with negative influences. The negative impacts often cause behavioral and emotional issues which require the expertise of ECHO’s licensed counselors and social workers.

Consider these statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness:

  • 8% of youths have an anxiety disorder.
  • 10% of youths have a behavior or conduct disorder.
  • 20% of youths (ages 13-18) live with a mental health condition.
  • 37% of students (age 14+) with a mental health condition drop out of school.
  • 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24.

Vision & mission

  • Vision: Be recognized nationally as the premier provider of social and emotional services to children in a growing number of schools.
  • Mission: Partner with faith-based and public schools to provide innovative social and emotional services by empowering all children and families, particularly the underserved, with skills for life.
