The UD School of Education and Health Sciences offers 11 undergraduate degree programs and 11 undergraduate certificate, licensure & endorsement programs to help prepare students for careers in education, health, wellness, sport or physical activity. UD SEHS also offers 24 graduate degree programs and 22 graduate certificate, licensure & endorsement programs. Students gain valuable experience through research, study abroad, internships and community programs.

  • Integrative Physiology: For individuals interested in professional schools, such as Physician Assistant, Medical or other graduate programs in Biosciences and Health Sciences.
  • Exercise & Movement Science: For individuals interested in Physical Therapy, Orthotic and Prosthetic, Athletic Training programs, or other related fields of study.
  • Occupational & Behavioral Studies: For individuals interested in Occupational Therapy, Behavior Therapy, or accelerated Nursing programs.

Teaching grades K-12

Gain an understanding of students with mild to moderate disabilities at various ages and stages of development, and from various cultures, socioeconomic levels, ethnic groups and ranges of abilities. Discover how family diversity (i.e. economic, linguistic, cultural and ethnic lines) impacts students, as well as understand how disabilities affect each student.

  • Community Health: For individuals who want to work to improve health at a population level. Career options include working with public health agencies, non-profit organizations, schools.
  • Health & Fitness: The intersection of understanding the business of taking care of our bodies. Students are prepared to be leaders in the booming wellness industry. Career options include working with fitness facilities (personal trainers & managers), corporate wellness programs, coaching, sales & marketing.
  • Sport Management: Applied understanding of facilities, finance, human resource management, law, marketing, media and sales — and how they relate to sports. Includes a minor in Business Administration. Career options include working with collegiate & pro sports, public & private recreation, event management, media organizations, higher education, sales & marketing.

Certificate program

For UD undergraduate students enrolled in any major.

Prepares students with historical, cultural, catechetical and spiritual background that is particularly relevant for students interested in teaching in Catholic schools or pursuing parish ministry.

Note: This certificate alone does not meet the requirements for teacher licensure in the State of Ohio.

For undergraduate students in Teacher Education.

Provides knowledge and practical application of skills for instructing students with dyslexia within the regular classroom.

Note: This is a UD-issued certificate and does not represent state licensure.

Endorsement program

For undergraduate Teacher Education students.

Will allow teachers in self-contained fourth and fifth grade classrooms to teach mathematics, science and social studies. Students enrolled in an early childhood education program may complete the coursework for this program as a focus area for their undergraduate degree.

For undergraduate students in Teacher Education.

Provides knowledge and skills required of program administrators, supervisors, teacher leaders and advocates for effective leadership and advocacy in a variety of early childhood settings. Students enrolled in an Early Childhood Education license program may complete the coursework for the Early Childhood Leadership and Advocacy certificate as a focus area for their undergraduate degree.

Comprised of five 3-semester hour courses that are offered online. Coursework may be taken as a stand-alone certificate or may be applied to a degree in Early Childhood Leadership and Advocacy.

Endorsement program

For undergraduate Teacher Education students.

Can be added to any existing middle childhood education license for any combination of the four areas of concentration (mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social studies). Allows teachers to teach grades 4-6 only.

For undergraduate Teacher Education students.

Can be added to an intervention specialist or early childhood education license. Allows teachers to teach children ages 3-5 who have mild or moderate-to-intensive needs. Students enrolled in an early childhood education program may complete the coursework for the prekindergarten special needs endorsement as a focus area for their undergraduate degree.

For undergraduate Teacher Education students.

Additional licensure option for students who successfully complete the Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 degree program. Individuals earning this license are qualified to teach children ages 3-10 who have mild or moderate-to-intensive needs.

Note: This is an Educator Preparation program (leading to a State of Ohio-issued license).

Designed to have pre-service teachers take a variety of courses, including a heavy requirement for mathematics and science courses. Certificate acknowledges students are knowledgeable in the area of STEM education.

For UD students enrolled in any major.

Prepares students to teach English as an additional language in postsecondary schools, adult education settings and private language institutes in the United States and abroad. It can also provide opportunities for preservice teacher education students to develop competence in working with English-language learners in their grade level and content area classrooms.

Note: This certificate alone does not meet the requirements for the TESOL endorsement from the state of Ohio; however, the certificate coursework will apply toward the TESOL endorsement program, which is offered at the graduate level.

Specialized program for pre-service teachers who have an interest in urban teaching. Students receive specialized training and are paired with mentor teachers who can help them cope with the challenges of teaching in today's urban classroom.

Gain knowledge and insight into the practice of human services and counseling techniques. Program is appropriate for people in the clergy, nursing, criminal justice and other related fields.

Note: This program does not lead to obtaining Ohio's Professional Counseling (PC) or Professional Clinical Counseling (PCC) licenses. Individuals who intend to obtain either license must enroll in UD's Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.

Individuals have the flexibility to design a program to meet their diverse professional goals. Select concentration coursework from both the School of Education and Health Sciences and at least one department outside SEHS. Students working toward State of Ohio-issued licenses in visual arts or music education programs apply for this degree.

The program leads to a State of Ohio-issued teaching license for grades PK-12.

Graduate Certificate, License & Endorsement Programs

License program

Program leads to an Ohio teaching license for grades 7-12. It also leads to the Professional Educator Certificate issued by the University of Dayton. Complete approved program coursework in one of the following teaching concentration areas: earth sciences, integrated language arts, integrated mathematics, integrated social studies, life sciences or physical sciences.

Note: Applicants to this program must apply for the Master of Science in Education degree with a concentration in Adolescence to Young Adult Education.

Certificate program

For individuals in education, the non-profit sector, and government positions who have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and are interested in learning how to undertake scientific research, or simply better understand research they read, in the social and behavioral sciences.

Individuals develop knowledge and skills in the role and function of the Intervention Specialist and the general education teacher in providing services to students with autism and related disorders.

Prepares individuals to work with students with dyslexia within the regular classroom. Learn advanced phonics and multisensory instructional methods to meet the needs of students with dyslexia.

Note: You must be admitted to UD's Literacy master's degree program or Reading Preparation program before admission into the Dyslexia certificate program.

License program

Individuals in this program are eligible to earn two Ohio licenses:

  • Early Childhood Education: Valid for teaching children ages 3-8 or for pre-kindergarten through grade 3 who are typically-developing.
  • Early Childhood Intervention Specialist: Valid for teaching children who have mild, moderate to intensive educational needs, including service coordination.

Note: Applicants to this program must apply for the Master of Science in Education degree with a concentration in Transdisciplinary Early Childhood Education.

Designed for early childhood professionals. Coursework can be taken as a standalone certificate at the graduate or undergraduate level. It can also be applied to the master of education in Early Childhood Leadership and Advocacy.

Candidates create high-quality programs for infants and toddlers and that support secure parental and caregiver attachment, social and emotional development and resilience; identify and implement culturally responsive strategies that support infant and toddler development within the context of their family; and demonstrate skills that support language development in ways that form the neuro network shown to be the foundation for all future learning.
