Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 (BSE)

Preparing teachers to inspire early learners

As a student in the Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 program at the University of Dayton, you'll learn the knowledge and skills necessary to inspire early learners. Our program integrates coursework in child development, content, preparation for teaching and working with children with special learning needs, along with hands-on experience and constant support from your University of Dayton community.

Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to teach Pre-Kindergarten through the 5th grades (ages 3-10). Our program meets all the requirements for a State of Ohio license to teach students in that age range.

Hands-on learning

Firsthand teaching experiences begin your first year, with a placement in a local elementary school.

You'll also have unique access to the Bombeck Family Learning Center, the Dayton area's leading early childhood education center. During your second year in the program, you'll actively participate in the Bombeck Center's classrooms during your field practicum. The Center's teachers mentor Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 majors by providing you with support and observation experiences.

Program outcomes

You'll develop comprehensive knowledge of the principles of education for children in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade, while also developing your personal and professional commitment to teaching. You'll learn the content taught in pre-kindergarten to 5th grade and how to design and implement curriculum. You'll also learn about the school’s role in society, and how your role as a teacher can change the future of education.
