Help Students Learn to Read

Reading is a fundamental skill that is necessary to succeed in any field. Children who struggle to read will struggle in and out of school for their whole lives.

The University of Dayton's certificate in reading preparation will set you up to be an expert in teaching children of all ages to read. The certificate program leads to a state of Ohio reading endorsement for PK-12 licensed teachers.

Through this program, you will learn how to identify readers who are struggling. You'll learn different techniques and approaches to get these readers back on track. Grounded in the science of reading, you'll learn how to teach literacy and instill a love of literature that will help children simultaneously learn to read and read to learn at every age.

Earning my Reading Endorsement at UD sent me on the career path I am on today.

Curriculum

This certificate program is designed for working teachers. The heaviest course loads occur during the summer, with practical application classes held concurrently with the school year.

To be eligible for the state of Ohio reading endorsement, you must already have a teaching license. Students who are not licensed teachiers but are still interested in gaining knowledge in skills in reading preparation are still welcome to enroll in and earn the UD certificate.

The four-course program is designed to be taken in a cohort model, meaning you'll be with the same group of students for all four classes. This allows you to build rapport with your classmates and network with other teachers.

Laying the foundation

There are four courses grounded in phonics and literary science that lay the foundation for the certificate in reading preparation. These courses should be taken within five years of pursuing the certificate. If you've never taken a course like these, or if it has been longer than five years, we will work with you on a plan to fulfill these requirements before or during the certificate program. Many students meet most or all of these prerequisites from their undergraduate degree. Contact us for a transcript evaluation to determine which of your courses will count toward the prerequisites.

  • 605: Advanced Study in Reading/Language Arts
  • 606: Assessment and Evaluation of Reading Difficulties
  • 607: Practicum in Reading Intervention Techniques
  • 608: The Writing Classroom

Option to Continue on to a Master's

Students who are interested in continuing beyond the certificate in reading preparation can apply all of their certificate courses towards a Master's in Educational Leadership with a concentration in literacy. The master's degree requires 10 courses, so having completed these four would give you a significant head start on the master's coursework.
