Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Earn a Dual License
Students who have graduated from University of Dayton's School Counseling program are eligible to enroll in the Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
This program is nine courses (24 credit hours) and will enable students to qualify to sit for the National Counselor Exam (NCE) for licensure in Ohio.
To qualify for consideration in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Certification program, School Counseling graduates must:
- Apply to the program through UD's online application portal
- The certificate program is under the graduate application as a major in "Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Certificate in School of Education and Health Sciences)." Be sure to select the summer term to see the certificate option in the dropdown menu.
- Obtain a letter of recommendation from one of UD’s School Counseling program faculty
- Meet one of the following criteria:
- Be in final semester of UD's School Counseling program and in good academic standing (Please contact Dr. Brenda Gerhardt with questions – bgerhardt1@udayton.edu)
- Have graduated from UD’s School Counseling program within the past five years
- If graduated from UD’s School Counseling program over five years ago, please demonstrate consistent work experience as a school counselor by providing a letter from your employer, on letterhead, and a minimum of two personal references.
Once the online application is completed, the CMHC Program Coordinator will review the application and schedule an interview with the applicant.

- Students who have already taken EDC 635 (Couples and Family Counseling) will take EDC 671 (Biological Neurological Basis of Behavior).
- Students must complete a total of 3 sections of EDC 598 Internship (600 training hours). Internships can be completed in 2 or 3 semesters.
- All students must attend the Practicum/Internship Orientation before beginning internship.
