Steve Schafer
Acting Group Leader, Senior RF Research Engineer
University of Dayton Research Institute: Sensor and Software Systems
Profile
Steve Schafer serves as the acting leader of the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) group comprised of researchers and engineers investigating remote sensing; radar systems and components; processing, detection, and data products; EO; LADAR; target phenomenology; electromagnetic effects and environment; and other related areas. He has over 24 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer in the Defense sector, having served both the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). He has supported research, development, and operational analysis for the ISR community in radar phenomenology, modeling and simulation, training development, systems engineering, and verification and validation (V&V).
Research
Research and development activities within the ISR Group include the following:
- Multi-Input, Multi-Output (MIMO) radar research to support range development, installation, testing, and operation
- Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) research involving image formation and processing, system performance measurement, and target and background signatures measurement
- Radar target signatures measurement and evaluation in multiple domains
- Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods for electromagnetic characterization of complex media
- Wideband multi-spectral sensing analysis, design, fabrication, and experimentation
