Profile

Dr. Larry Lain enjoys teaching and studying journalism and publishing. His scholarly expertise lies in writing and editing newspapers and books, both in print and electronic media. His scholarship has been published in Journalism Quarterly (now titled Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly) and Newspaper Research Journal, among other outlets. In recent years, Larry has put his expertise into practice, writing a series of travel books as well as revising some textbooks he and colleagues have written. His books Paris for Families and London for Families are now in their 2nd and 3rd editions, with new editions on the way.

Once the department's longest-tenured faculty member, Larry did some impressive work at UD. He did numerous local and national radio interviews, served as an on-air critic for a local TV show, served on the board of directors for a community newspaper in the Dayton area and served as production manager of the Ohio Speech Journal and as a copy editor for the Dayton Daily News. A few oddities: Larry once edited the UD Catalogue, and he turned down an offer to appear on Oprah. Since 1987, he has served as advisor to the Flyer News and has been inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame. His text The Advertising Survival Kit has been in print for more than 30 years and is used in high schools and scholastic journalism workshops throughout the country.

Faculty perspective

"Historically UD has always been a very humane place, a place where people matter. That, more than anything, is what has kept me here for so long. The prevailing philosophy here has always been that people are more important than systems. UD presents its students with opportunities I couldn't have dreamed of when I was in college, makes them accessible, and encourages students to stretch themselves in a lot of exciting ways."
