What do you like most about your major?

I have always loved biology because it reveals the most intricate workings of life and understanding the complex processes and interactions that sustain life fascinates me and increases my appreciation of the world.

What do you love most about UD?

The breadth of opportunity available to students. There truly is something for everyone.

Have you ever participated in faculty-mentored research? If so, what did you learn from that experience?

I work in the Williams Lab, where we use Drosophila to study how genes, gene clusters and gene networks function, as well as how existing functions can be modified or altogether new functions evolve. Not only have I learned a great number of scientific practices, experiments and protocols, but I have grown as a scientist and in understanding  scientific literature, presentation and discussion, how to interpret my own data, and experiencing how lab environments function day-to-day.

Favorite class at UD and why?

My favorite class at UD is Evolution and Development. It goes hand in hand with my research and is a fascinating combination of two important fields of biology. I am captivated by the understandings behind how all of life can be so similar in their genetic and molecular mechanisms, but how life also develops to be so diverse.

What piece of your academic journey has you most prepared to begin a career after graduation?

My research experience in the Williams Lab has most prepared me for my post-graduation goals. It has provided an invaluable learning opportunity and has truly developed my skills as a scientist to be prepared for my next step.

What clubs/organizations are you involved in at UD?

  • Beta Beta Beta (honor society)
  • National Biological Honors Society
  • University Honors Program
  • CAS Ambassador

Why did you choose UD?

I chose UD because of the research opportunities, and because the research professors at this University get to teach classes. This provides a unique opportunity where students can learn from instructors who are truly passionate about teaching their specialized subjects. It can make a huge positive impact on students when a professor loves the subject they are teaching, and this is something I've found to be prevalent at UD.
