What do you like most about your major?
Everything has an answer and explanation. Psychology is applied biology, it’s applied chemistry, it’s applied physics, it’s applied mathematics. If I'm curious about something, I know it has a textbook worth of explanations and reasoning. Finding connections within science that explain everyday phenomena are the most exciting parts of my education.
What do you love most about UD?
I'm never afraid to ask for help. As my classes get more advanced, I'm starting to see the same faces every day. People I've never talked to, but who are on the same path as me. I'm a shy person, but it's easy to find your people here. Everyone is just as passionate as I am, and so willing to help out and support their peers.
Have you ever participated in faculty-mentored research? If so, what did you learn from that experience?
I'm part of Roger Reeb's St. Vincent DePaul homelessness self-efficacy project, where I'll be helping out with different aspects of educational access and self-confidence within the shelter. I'm just now getting started, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot in the coming semester.
Favorite class at UD and why?
Medical Terminology with Dr. Annette Chavez. Now that I'm in my junior year, I feel like I'm finally getting closer to my goal of being a physician. Dr. Chavez took a medical terminology class and turned it into a glimpse into my future, giving us first-hand experience in common medical procedures and vivid stories about her time in the field.
What piece of your academic journey has you most prepared to begin a career after graduation?
I've done a lot of work for Dayton Children's Hospital through the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community. Over the summer, I spent nearly 300 hours working with their Center for Health Equity. I researched local organizations, spent time out in the community and completed a literature review on social determinants of health screening. After presenting that research to a group of doctors and hospital administration, I feel prepared for just about anything.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in at UD?
- Health Equity Fellowship
- Brain Health Collective (research with the Dayton V.A.)
- CAS Ambassador
Why did you choose UD?
UD has a great Premedical program, and the Fitz Center works closely with the Dayton community. I've spent most of my life in Dayton, and want to continue being closely involved in revitalization efforts and making Dayton a more equitable place, specifically in the healthcare sector.
