What do you like most about your major?
I like how interdisciplinary the opportunities are. You get a worldview of biological applications for environmental concerns but also an insight to medical and technological applications. Majoring in biology allows me to have an understanding of the various scales of medical and environmental solutions by tying together subjects like environmental science, genetics and cancer biology.
What do you love most about UD?
I love how supportive the faculty and staff are. I've never met someone who wasn't genuinely interested in my path and everyone has something to offer. I've found support from someone in every step I've taken, ranging from coursework to research. Everyone here shares the same passion for learning and growth so it's easy to work together to reach our goals. It's definitely a place where students can find their passions and thrive.
Have you ever participated in faculty-mentored research? If so, what did you learn from that experience?
I am currently in a cancer behavior lab. I got to work in the lab over the summer and I learned so much more than I ever thought was possible. From this experience, I got to apply classroom knowledge to real applications. Seeing the things I've learned come to life in front of me was an amazing experience. I learned how to problem solve, analyze and organize data and to better communicate with teammates. It was a chance to explore my passions and interests and build on things I've learned in my coursework.
Favorite class at UD and why?
My favorite class is BIO 312 because of how hands-on the coursework is. You take the things you've been learning about genetics in more basic classes, build on your knowledge and then use that to solve problems involving disease transmission and genetic disorders.
What piece of your academic journey has you most prepared to begin a career after graduation?
My research experience has best prepared me for a career after graduation. Working in the lab I've been able to figure out exactly what path I'm wanting to take after undergrad.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in at UD?
- Muslim Student Association
- Beta, Beta, Beta (honor society)
- Academic Affairs Committee
- CAS Ambassador
Why did you choose UD?
I chose UD because it's close to home and it offered every opportunity I could've ever imagined. I knew that coming here I'd gain real world experiences that would support me in any path I take after undergrad.
Is there anything else about your UD experience you think prospective students and their families should know?
You're going to gain what you're willing to give. As long as you're willing to engage with the UD community and be an active participant in clubs, organizations and research, you will facilitate an amazing experience for yourself. It's important to make time for these things because they're what's going to best set you up for a career after UD. The support system here is unlike that of any other university. You really can't go wrong with choosing UD.
