Intergenerational Summer Music Institute
Summer Music Program
Coming Summer 2024
This one week “summer music camp” for adults and middle school band students will be held at Centerville’s Watts Middle School, 7056 McEwen Road. Convenient parking and accessibility.
Intergenerational jazz band (IJB) is for those who have played their instrument for at least one year. The class will introduce students to playing jazz and will include styles, improvisation and ensemble techniques. IJB members must supply their own method book: First Place for Jazz, by Dean Sorenson ($9). We suggest ordering from Stanton’s Sheet Music at www.stantons.com or by calling toll free at 800-42-MUSIC.
Small ensemble instruction is for musicians of any expertise level. Classes will focus on improving musical skills through playing in small ensembles. Small groups of like or mixed instruments (such as trios, quartets, etc.) will be formed once registration is complete. Small ensemble participants will supply their own music or use instructor’s music (dependent upon group assignments/ensembles). A variety of musical styles will be available to rehearse.
Meet the Director
This is Sheila Reynolds’ fourth year directing an intergenerational summer music program involving UD New Horizons members and Watts Middle School students.

She directed the Watts Pep Band for six years, has been assistant director of the Centerville Youth Orchestra for 12 years and was assistant marching band director for one year. She founded the Centerville Middle School Clarinet Ensemble, Winditude, and Watts Middle School’s student-led Jazz Combo. Special guest instructors from the Dayton area will join Sheila this week to offer sectionals and coaching.
