Night School Session 5: Tasting the Middle Ages with Dr. Bobbi Sutherland

6:00 PM to 7:30 PM ET JOUI Wine Bar, 117 East 3rd Street, Dayton, Ohio

Night School: An intimate evening of education and conversation with expert talks. Dive into big ideas in a happy hour setting, ask questions, and connect with curious minds. Ticket includes a welcome drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and a lecture from an industry expert. Have you ever wondered what medieval food was like? Have you ever heard of the obsession with heavily spiced food and wine, and possibly the claim that spices were used to cover the taste of rotting meat? Then this is the course for you! You'll learn about where the spices came from and why people were so obsessed with them, including the opportunity to see and smell some of them, as well as sample some medieval food and wine. At the end of the event, you'll take home a bouquet of spices to make your own medieval brew. NOTE: Joui Wine is normally closed on Mondays. Doors open at 6 p.m., last call is 7:30 p.m.; all guests must be gone by 8 p.m. Joui Wine's kitchen will not be open, but event tickets include a small medieval food dish and beverage. Feel free to bring a snack!

Meet the Presenter

Bobbi Sutherland, Ph.D., is a full-time faculty member in the UD Department of History, where she serves as an associate professor. She specializes in medieval history, teaching courses in Medieval Europe and the history of food. Sutherland holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Yale University. Her research centers the social, economic, and culinary history of the later Middle Ages.
