UD student, aspiring children’s book author wins student sustainability poster contest

University of Dayton graphic design major Shannon Stanforth won the poster session at the 2019 Ohio Student Sustainability Leaders Conference for her display which explains her “process of combining the fields of sustainability and design to produce a children’s book which underscores the importance of caring for our natural world.”
Stanforth’s poster called “Sustainable Stories: Linking Graphic Design and the Environment to Inform, Educate, and Inspire” is a continuation of her work at UD’s Berry Summer Thesis Institute. She said her honors thesis involves exploring the connections between design and sustainability.
Her children’s book, titled “They Named Me, They Know Me,” explores how humans named trees, flowers, butterflies and frogs but seemingly forgot how special they are. Stanforth plans to further research methods for sustainable printing and to publish her book.
A senior also earning minors in sustainability, energy and the environment, fine arts and biology, Stanforth won free registration to January’s NCSE 2020 Annual Conference to present her work.
“Sharing my work with others further spreads the message of the necessity of pursuing a sustainable future and encourages me to continue along the path of linking the fields of sustainability and design,” Stanforth said.
