Gathering Around the Table

By Eric F. Spina

(University of Dayton President Eric F. Spina's Thanksgiving message to the campus community)

Dear University of Dayton Family,

In the days leading up to Thanksgiving break, a number of students gathered around the table in their houses and apartments for “Friendsgiving” celebrations.

I love these celebrations of friendship, fellowship, and faith — gatherings around tables with friends who have become family and the true spirit of gratitude and presence they represent. Thanksgiving is celebrated in many cultures and religious traditions, and it has a special place in the hearts of Catholics. Our English word Eucharist comes from the Greek word for "thanksgiving" — a table celebration of abiding presence and gratitude.

I will take this long weekend to pause, reflect, pray, be present to family and friends, and, most of all, be thankful for large and small blessings. I’m so grateful for the gifts each of you brings to our campus as we strive to be a University that welcomes all around the table.

Karen, Kaitlyn, Emery, and I wish you a joyful holiday. May this be a time of reflection, renewal — and gratitude.

With grace and blessings,

Eric F. Spina
President
