Reducing Grading Load with Model Answers in Isidore

By Kent Darr

Worked examples or model answers are a pedagogical strategy where a student completes a problem or writes a response on their own, then views the instructor's correct response. After reviewing the correct response, the instructor provides a place for the student to either explain what they did wrong or revise their initial attempt.

Because the student is, in essence, reviewing their own work themselves, the evaluation effort is flipped from the instructor to the student, thereby decreasing the instructor grading load. Moreover, while evaluating their own work, the student will better master the material, resulting in a more effective learning activity.

With a model answer & reflection assignment, the instructor no longer has to review each student's work in detail, but rather now might just assign a participating grade based on a pre-defined rubric, a deadline, or just completion.

In this 5 minute video below, instructional designer Kent Darr reviews the model answer & reflection approach using the Assignments and Quick Write tools within the Isidore learning management system.
