It’s not a dumb question. We promise.
“I’m sure this is something really easy, but . . . “
“This is such a dumb question, I know . . .”
“I know I’m doing something wrong . . .”
So many calls and emails to the Office of eLearning start off this way, especially at the beginning of the semester when everything is an overwhelming overflow of information.
These Socrative attempts to establish a lack-of-knowledge are appreciated, as helping someone who claims ignorance is usually far easier to help than those who fancy themselves experts. But, it also breaks my heart a bit each time a call starts with one of these self-disparaging remarks – especially since the caller saying these things is often a woman.
As teachers and learners at this Marianist institution, we owe it to ourselves to healthfully acknowledge vulnerability and ignorance without demeaning ourselves. And, while I live, laud, and love Isidore, let’s be honest – it can be daunting to use. Instead of denigrating yourself, a person worthy of love and respect, put the blame on the system. I won’t lie to you – I might be a little defensive of the system if you go overboard with your insults since my team has helped build the system from the ground up. But I also recognize that just like anything, it can be hard to learn how to use.
So give us a call if you’re stuck with learning technology. We promise we’ll never make you feel like you’re asking a dumb question. We want to help you – and your students – be successful.
