UD in Print … Online
By Katy Kelly
Issues of University of Dayton’s student newspaper published between fall 1955 and spring 1971 are now available to search, browse and read online, thanks to gifts made to the University Libraries in 2022 for One Day, One Dayton, UD’s annual giving day.
Online access provides anyone the opportunity to revisit that time at UD and research these decades. View the issues on eCommons, UD’s institutional repository, a service of the University Libraries.
Approximately 340 issues were added to the existing Flyer News online archive. The additional issues were chosen in response to teaching and research interests; the print copies had been frequently requested and used. Providing access online ensures that the fragile print copies can be maintained in the University Archives.
You can browse the issues by year or search within the entire collection. Each issue provides fascinating student perspectives about UD, Dayton and the world. Cultural snapshots include articles about sporting events, concerts and life on campus — even advertisements for clothing and cigarettes are indicative of that time period.
A subsequent digitization project of more issues of Flyer News is part of the Libraries’ One Day, One Dayton 2023 project goals. Give your gift early or on April 19 to the Libraries Dean’s Fund for Excellence to ensure quality scanning, access and preservation continues for these invaluable documents.
We would love to hear your stories or questions about what’s inside these newspapers. Email University Archives at archives@udayton.edu.
