University Libraries Implement Chosen Names for Library Accounts

By Kevin Cretsos

With the 2019 adoption of a policy to use chosen names whenever possible when students, faculty and staff designate them, staff in the University Libraries began working with UDit to tailor the patron database and information system to ensure that communications from the Libraries follow suit.

Now, when students, staff and faculty log in to their online library account or receive circulation notices or other library communication, the system will address them with the chosen name rather than the legal name.

For patrons who have not designated a chosen name, the library account will continue to display the legal name.

The new policy is one of many University efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion on campus. To request the use of a chosen name, see the policy’s frequently asked questions page to find out whom you need to contact.
