UD Connections inspire the study of Mary

By Dr. Keith Jiron, S.T.D.

I am delighted to have recently become part of the Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation at the University of Dayton. As I learn more about it, I am continually impressed with its online classes, certificate programs and its international scope. Following my passion for Mariology, I recently designed a course for the upcoming Marian Studies Certificate program.

I remember one day vividly. I met up with an old friend from the seminary and I casually mentioned my desire for further studies. It turns out his wife had just graduated with her masters from the University of Dayton. He told me about the doctoral program in Mariology through the International Marian Research Institute (IMRI) housed at UD. One quick phone call and I was well on my way toward pursuing this degree.

Then, a few months after completing the doctoral program, a good friend and classmate from IMRI, who facilitates online classes for the VLCFF, reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in creating and facilitating a Mariology course. I jumped at the opportunity and have very much enjoyed facilitating the pilot course entitled: “An Introduction to Catholic Doctrine on the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

I am excited to be a part of the VLCFF and see my work here as a small way to give back for the wonderful education I received. I have found that facilitating an online course for VLCFF keeps me on my toes and it reminds me that we are never done learning. I enjoy the many different perspectives that VLCFF participants bring to the course discussion. Their insights and struggles often remind me of how the Blessed Mother is at work in the world and in people’s lives, drawing us all closer to her Son, Jesus.

Look for the Marian studies certificate program online classes to be offered in 2023.
