Coca-Cola Nativity

By Michele Devitt, Curatorial Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator

How ingenious for an artist to take trash and turn it into an object of art. How many aluminum cans have we each thrown in a trash or recycling bin in our lifetime? Having the vision to take a common item, like a Coca-Cola can, and create an artistic representation of the Holy Family is intriguing and something to be appreciated.

Look closely at Baby Jesus. The warped wires that were used to weave the strips of aluminum through extend through the head and form a crown of thorns. This foretells Christ's crucifixion — the whole story!

This unique Nativity will be on display at this year's At the Manger exhibit.
