Newly Digitized Novenas

By Kayla Harris, Librarian/Archivist

The word novena comes from the Latin word “novem” meaning “nine.” Novenas are a form of devotion where a specific prayer is said in succession for nine days. Novenas may be dedicated to a particular angel, saint, or a specific Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The prayers may be said individually or collectively as a group, with each novena having a specific intention and purpose.

The Marian Library has a large collection of novenas, some that are part of the circulating collection and some that are part of the non-circulating special collections. Digital Projects Manager Ryan O’Grady recently digitized fourteen Marian Library historical novenas, with plans to add more in the future. These novenas are available to view and download in eCommons.

For more information about novenas, All About Mary has a great explanatory article.
