Integrated Learning-Living Communities

Women in Science and Engineering

By Jack O'Gorman, WISE Coordinator

If you are a woman interested in STEM fields, then WISE is the place for you. The Women in Science and Engineering Integrated Living and Learning Community (WISE) is a community of learners who take classes together, live together, and have fun together. Some of our events this year included an orientation meeting and tool workshop. We worked with the local TechFest to help Dayton area K-3 students get excited about science.  We also held Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, where we made blankets for patients at Children’s Hospital. The WISE Special Interest House also sponsored tutoring.

In addition to the shared courses inspiring scientific exploration and discussion, WISE students had the chance to interact with upper-level students and science and engineering faculty. Many students have said that WISE has helped them get active in college and be successful in their majors. Many WISE women also participated in the Collegiate Learning Assessment Plus (CLA+), which measures critical thinking skills. Their high participation earned the WISE women a party from the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences.
