University Honors Program

From the Top

By Emma Kapp

After countless hours of reading and writing, senior Zach Zielinski has finished his thesis, “Resources in Conducting Pedagogy: The Techniques, Methodologies and Philosophies of the Modern Conductor.” He, along with 66 other Honors thesis writers, presented his work at the Honors Student Symposium on March 22. As a music education major, writing a thesis wasn’t the traditional route for Zielinski to take. However, upon reflecting on his experience, he is glad he chose to take on this project.

“Being a part of the Honors Program has provided me with this unique opportunity that I just could not pass up,” Zielinski said. “It is exciting to be able to perform master’s level research while being an undergraduate.”

With assistance from his advisor, Dr. Patrick Reynolds, Zielinski examined different conducting techniques through philosophical, methodological and historical perspectives. He hopes his work will serve as a resource for other conductors when they are determining what style best suits their needs.

“The biggest takeaway from my research is I have realized that the craft of conducting is just as vast as the world of music itself,” Zielinski adds.

A thesis is just the first step for Zielinski, though. He wants to continue his research over the course of his career as a music educator.

“Texts will continue to be written for years to come,” Zielinski reasons. “Who knows? Maybe I will end up writing my own text on conducting.”

As this part of his academic journey concludes, Zielinski is thankful for the opportunities he has received. He feels confident to take on the next chapter of his life and is ready to make an impact.

“All of the real-life experience that Dayton provides has not only allowed me to grow in the classroom, but to take what I learn to the field in order to provide the most meaningful music education to my students.”
