University Honors Program

Living the Dream

By Emma Kapp

Kate Bennett has the unique ability to say her internships have taken her across both the country and the globe.

The senior, studying marketing and international business, participated in an Honors signature program, Global Flyers: London, in summer 2017. She worked for Zipcube, an organization that facilitates the rental of public spaces for meetings and private events. Zipcube was a start-up company, so Bennett took on several responsibilities.

“I was working on paid search digital marketing and dabbling in other digital aspects like social media and key-wording,” Bennett recalled. “I was working with a very small budget and, since they had no marketing department, I was running the entire thing by myself.”

Because of her time at Zipcube, Bennett further developed her skills as a businesswoman and built a foundation for her future successes.

“I got to work in a very hands-on environment that prepared me well to speak about my experience in interviews,” Bennett said. “It also helped me start building my network in a new country, which is amazing since business is so heavily based on networking. I felt like a more well-rounded individual after my London Flyer summer.”

Bennett credits her experience with London Flyers as one of the reasons she felt confident enough to apply for her dream internship. She was hired by Williams-Sonoma Inc. in San Francisco this summer and worked in the programmatic marketing department to develop retargeting campaigns.

“Essentially, we were using an automated bidding system to serve ads on phones and computers to customers that have viewed our website or purchased from us previously,” she explained. “It was a totally new part of marketing that I had no previous exposure to.”

Although her work experiences were in different parts of the world, Bennett found a few similarities in her tasks.

“I was learning about new parts of digital marketing the entire time and starting to understand that I really do want to work in the retail industry after graduation,” she said. “I was somewhat afraid of data and using advanced tech before both of my internships, but my experience with both helped me see the value in getting a good grasp on data analytics.”

With two substantial internship experiences, Bennett has a clear vision for what she would like to do in the future. She hopes to return to Williams-Sonoma Inc. and work on one of their digital marketing teams. Bennett recognizes the impact her experiences had on her career path and is thankful for the chance to explore them.

“I know for a fact that without both of these summer opportunities I would not be nearly as competitive a candidate in the intense world of advertising technology,” Bennett said. “I am so thankful for the Honors Program and all of the amazing mentors, professors, and friends at UD that really encouraged me to follow my dream.”
