Erma Watch Party with Judy Carter: A Death-Defying Escape!

Many know Judy Carter as the author of The New Comedy Bible and a popular keynote speaker and presenter of comedy workshops at the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop.

Perhaps what you didn’t know is that she broke gender barriers to become one of America’s first female magicians and has written and is starring in A Death-Defying Escape!, a darkly funny and inspiring new comedy about one woman’s miraculous escape from the secrets of her past.

The three-person autobiographical show is playing to rave reviews at the Hudson Guild Theatre in Los Angeles through Sunday, May 15. Carter, who’s part of the faculty at the Oct. 20-22 workshop, invites the Erma writers’ community to stream the final performance at 3 p.m. (PT) and participate in a private talk-back session with her and the cast afterwards. Tickets, normally $25, are reduced to $15 for the Erma community. Order here and use the discount code Erma.

Disclaimer: Show includes mature content, including themes of childhood trauma, that may be disturbing and too intense for some viewers.

Carter grew up with a sister with cerebral palsy and an alcoholic, abusive father. She says her play’s storyline features something for everyone: “Jewish humor, a lesbian romance, a clarion call for disability awareness — and jaw-dropping, on-stage magic.

“If you have ever thought of writing your own story, I hope my play inspires you,” said Carter, an author, stand-up comedian and motivational speaker. “Regardless of your age, escape is possible from the restraints of your past.”

Patricia Wynn Brown, former emcee of the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, calls A Death-Defying Escape “a highly professionally produced and carefully directed play. It is polished, and Judy commands the stage. Righteous anger punches through the scenes, but Judy amazingly adds humor to all of the misery and from a creative and professional view, that is a feat of extraordinary intellectual dexterity. Her ace of aces.”
