Erma Bombeck Student Scholarship Winner- Zinaejah Ozier

Writing has always been a passion of mine. Whether it's just writing down my thoughts or creatively jotting down multiple phrases to create a made-up story with fictional characters that somehow seem real. Receiving the scholarship to attend the Emma Bombeck Workshop is an opportunity that I am not taking for granted. Getting the opportunity to sit in a room filled with writers of all genres that will get me fired up for my future career in writing is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

As of now, I am so grateful that there is extra money to give out to the recipients of this scholarship. To me, reading about Erma and her journey has made me feel more confident in my own desires for being a writer. Being able to see another woman achieve her dreams, inspire others and now have a workshop to encourage after her is such an amazing thing to push me even more. Although her accomplishments are already filled with lots of success, there's still an ongoing legend that lives on to invest in the lives of aspiring writers like me.

Being part of this workshop is important to me because it's an opportunity for me to learn more about the art of writing and talk to those who are already in the field and share a common interest. A lot of times, I know it's hard for writers to even get their first words on paper. Being a writer in general is an art that most people don't understand and to have other people help me learn even more about it is honestly priceless. I truly believe there will be an energy in the room that will help me and any other attendees to continue their love for writing.

I am very excited to see what this workshop has in store. I realize that this will be an experience that will shape my future career as a writer, and it will be something that I will never forget. I love the idea of giving back to my community and one day I too will make sure to have something like this where I can share my skills in writing and spread my creative juices.

When I was accepted to the University of Dayton and mentioned Erma Bombeck as one of its famous students, my grandmother piped up that she loved Erma and used to read her columns in the paper weekly. I myself didn't get a proper introduction to Erma Bombeck until I was perusing a garage sale a year ago and picked up a dusty, vintage collection of four of her books. I read all four of them that summer and could see why my grandmother appreciated her wit and vivacity. However, I found other ...
