Erma Bombeck Student Scholarship Winner- Jordan Elliott

Flashback twelve years ago to my third-grade presentation on someone important to me, and you would find me dressed up as the one and only Erma Bombeck. I stood, decked out in pearls and my grandma's brooch, quoting Erma to everyone that walked by my tri-fold board.

Third grade me didn't really even know who Erma Bombeck was-although I learned a lot about her while doing my project on her-besides that she was famous for her writing, and boy, did I love writing. For the first twelve or thirteen years of my life, I wanted to be an author more than anything in the world, and even though my aspirations have now changed, writing still holds a special place in my heart.

To me, writing is a creative outlet that I can turn to when I'm stressed, and I look forward to attending the Erma Bombeck Writer's Workshop not just because I love writing, but also because I'm excited to get inspiration and guidance for my writing. Some people see Erma merely as a source of humor, or someone to quote, but I see her as much more than that. I see her as someone to look up to, someone who inspires me, someone who proves to me that despite all of the things telling me I can't do what I want to do, I can.

Thinking about the way Erma lived, her humor, her writing, puts a smile on my face and leads me to wonder what I can do to make my life and the lives of those around me more enjoyable and inspired. Being able to be a part of this workshop is very exciting for me both as an English major and as a creative individual, as it will allow me to broaden my horizons and learn and engage with others in the writing industry.

When I was accepted to the University of Dayton and mentioned Erma Bombeck as one of its famous students, my grandmother piped up that she loved Erma and used to read her columns in the paper weekly. I myself didn't get a proper introduction to Erma Bombeck until I was perusing a garage sale a year ago and picked up a dusty, vintage collection of four of her books. I read all four of them that summer and could see why my grandmother appreciated her wit and vivacity. However, I found other ...
