New format, same laughs

Laugh Out Loud: 40 Women Humorists Celebrate Then and Now…Before We Forget, a nostalgic, humorous look at life through the ages, is now available as an ebook.

Published by Allia Zobel Nolan in association with the University of Dayton's Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, the book was launched at the spring workshop, with half of the essayists in attendance for a book signing. The Kindle version is just $3.99, about the cost of a cappuccino. The popular paperback sells for $14.95, and is available on Amazon and in the University of Dayton's Bookstore. Part of the proceeds benefits the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop endowment fund, which keeps the workshop affordable for writers.

The book has received strong, early reviews and praise from nationally known writers and humorists.

"In the spirit of Erma Bombeck, one of the greatest humorists of all times, this collection celebrates the voice of women who are smart, strong and funny," write Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella, New York Times' bestselling authors of I See Life Through Rosé-Colored Glasses, in the opening pages of the book. "From yoga poses to funeral arrangements to dating mishaps, these stories will not only entertain but also remind us that life is too short not to laugh."

Kathy Kinney and Cindy Ratzlaff, authors of Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown Up Woman's Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve, call the humor anthology "an irreverent, non-soppy, laugh-until-you-gag reminder that the only way to survive and thrive in life is to hang on to your sense of humor."

From the beach to bookstores to bars, readers have posted photos of where they're reading Laugh Out Loud. One was spotted at a "Leprechaun Crossing" outside Dublin; another at the Motor City Comic Con in Michigan. The oldest reader: 93. The youngest: a toddler.

Three contributors - Bonnie Jean Feldkamp, Sandra Lingo and Denise Theiry - will participate in a book signing at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Kenton County Public Library in Covington, Kentucky. Other book signings have taken place in Michigan and Connecticut, and the book was sold at the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' annual convention this summer in Cincinnati.

Curtis Honeycutt

"I like to think of quotation marks as T. rex fingers, demarcating the words inside as special - kind of like the lucky underwear you only wear when you want to have an exceptionally awesome day." Curtis Honeycutt makes grammar fun in his nationally syndicated column, "Grammar Guy," which appears weekly in more than 100 newspapers. His amusing musings about gender-inclusive pronouns, prepositions at the end of sentences and the dreaded autocorrect function on IPhones garnered third p ...

Dressed down

I bought a dress online, a long black summer dress that I thought would make me look earthy and graceful. Dresses are foreign to me but I keep trying, like all the years I kept going back to Spanish classes thinking this next time I would become completely bilingual. Buenos dias! The dress, so chic and classy in the photo, could double as an emergency tent. It's that voluminous and heavy. Maybe it's water repellent, I don't know. It's a lot of dress, folds and folds of black with a high e ...
