Antioch Writers' Workshop opens scholarship contest
The Antioch Writers' Workshop at University of Dayton is offering full and half-tuition scholarships to the July 14-20 workshop, which features Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author Connie Schultz and an array of talented faculty with expertise in fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry.
Additionally, due to the generosity of a former AWW scholarship winner and alumnus, Dr. Kendall Klym, the workshop is pleased to announce a new contest this year: The Richard M. Sirota Prize and Scholarship.
Named for the late Richard M. Sirota, who inspired a number of prize-winning short stories and a novel in progress, The Richard M. Sirota Prize and Scholarship is valued at $1,000 and consists of full tuition to the Antioch Writers' Workshop, a stipend for lodging, and publication of a short story in the next issue of the AWW Collection.
To honor Mr. Sirota's unprecedented kindness, intentional lifestyle, and unassuming nature, short story submissions must contain an underdog and reflect great thought and care for subject matter and theme.
Dr. Kendall Klym will judge the final entries. No students, former students or anyone associated with the universities at which Dr. Klym has taught creative writing may enter the contest.
And as always, Antioch Writers' Workshop offers three memorial scholarships annually, named for Bill Baker, Betty Crumrine, and Judson Jerome, respectively, with both first- and second- place awards, for the annual summer program. First-place scholarships are for a full waiver of registration and tuition for the Full Week Summer Workshop ($775 value); second-place scholarships are for a half waiver of registration and tuition ($387.50 value).
The workshop is now open for submissions for all four scholarship opportunities, with an application deadline of April 15, 2018. Winners will be announced May 15, 2018.
Details about the scholarship opportunities may be found online. Submission are accepted through Submittable here.
