University of Dayton Electro-Optics and Photonics featured in Optica Journals and Conference

By Andrew Sarangan, chair, Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics

University of Dayton Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics Professor Partha Banerjee served as lead editor of a recent joint feature issue on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging, published in Optica’s Applied Optics and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A.

The issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dennis Gabor’s Nobel Prize in Holography, and the 15th anniversary of Optica’s Digital Holography and 3D Imaging Conference for which Banerjee was the general chair.

The joint issue contains 53 invited and contributed articles by leading researchers from around the world. This joint feature issue, which was published in February 2022, can be found at: https://opg.optica.org/ao/virtual_issue.cfm?vid=518, In the Introduction, Banerjee describes the motivation of the feature issue and gives a detailed overview of its contents.

Three top papers from the joint issue were selected as Editor’s Picks, “which serve to highlight articles with excellent scientific quality and are representative of the work taking place in a specific field." One of these was authored by Haiyun Guo, Haowen Zhou and Partha Banerjee, titled Use of structured light in 3D reconstruction of transparent objects.

Guo was also a student paper finalist at the Digital Holography and 3D Imaging Conference. A second paper by Zhou, Guo and Banerjee also appears in the feature issue.

Guo and Zhou came to UD through our educational partnership with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), one of the top optics universities in China. After completing their M.S. degrees in electro-optics in 2021, Guo went to Rice University, and Zhou went to Caltech, where they are pursuing their Ph.D. degrees.

Congratulations to Partha Banerjee, Haiyun Guo and Haowen Zhou!
