Center for Catholic Education at UD

Meet the Staff Series - Peggy Brun

We would now like to introduce you to Peggy Brun who is the Coordinator of the Lalanne program for the CCE. Peg is now completing her 5th year at the Center. She was born in Illinois, but was raised in Dayton, OH. Peg attended the University of Dayton for both her undergrad in Education and her Master’s in Pastoral Ministry. Here are Peg’s answers to the interview questions...

What do you do at the CCE?  Coordinator for Lalanne

Describe your family: My husband Randy and I have been married for 30 years. We have 7 children ranging in age from 27 to 7. Our daughters are all out of high school now; Bethany graduated from Mercyhurst University and works there now as the Coordinator for service learning. Emily went to NYC to become a makeup artist and now does make up for all sorts of events including weddings, proms, photo shoots, etc. Michelle will begin college this fall at UD and will major in Early Childhood Education. Our son David graduated from UD in Visual Communications Design and works as a graphic designer at Crown in New Bremen. John Luke will be a freshman at Carroll High School, Kevin will be in 7th grade at Ascension and Sammy will be in 2nd grade at Ascension. We love being a family and supporting each other’s activities and accomplishments, or just sitting around watching a movie!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Much of my free time is spent with our kids but when not with my kids, I really enjoy visiting with friends or playing/watching/coaching volleyball.

Why do you support Catholic Education? I have been in Catholic Education my entire life. I was a teacher, a youth minister, and a Pastoral Associate focusing on passing on the Catholic faith in many different forms. It is my way of saying “yes” to my calling of the Holy Spirit and sharing the good news.

What Catholic Education topic are you most passionate about? Supporting parents and families in passing on the faith – it is very challenging for parents and families to be counter-cultural today. One thing our family does is surround ourselves and our children with families of faith and then share that joy with others wherever we go.

Why do you look forward to coming to work every day? The joy of my “work” is that I get to work with young teachers who are learning how to share their faith, wherever they are on the journey, with their students and with each other. It is an honor to share what I have learned both in my professional life as well as in my personal life and to grow from the experiences that they share.

What is one piece of advice you would give to Catholic Educators? Learn to get comfortable with mystery. You don’t have to have all of the answers and to do it “right” all the time. Forgiveness and love encourage you to grow, especially when you practice them with others.

Who is your role model? Describe him/her/them: My role models are those teachers/coaches/parents/friends in my life who live(d) life with passion and conviction, but through humility share their passion and conviction with everyone without looking for accolades or acknowledgement.

Tell us three fun facts about you:  I am one of 7 girls; I am so excited to be traveling to Italy in September with my husband for our 30th wedding anniversary; when I was young I desperately wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder and teach in a one room schoolhouse.

Anything else you would like to tell us about yourself… We may be hosting a young person from China this fall!

Here are quotes from other members of the CCE staff:

“Peggy brings to Lalanne her experience as a teacher as well as her guidance and nurturing manner as a mother of seven.  This is a wonderful combination of skills to help support our Lalanne teachers during their two years of service in Catholic schools.”

“Peg has a contagious fun-loving spirit that brightens the Center each day.”

“Her deep care and passion shine forth in all that she does and in each conversation that she has. Peg is an inspiration to the young teachers that she mentors.”

A Catholic Thanksgiving

For Catholics, every Sunday is a time of thanksgiving. We gather as a church family, saints and angels among us, to partake in the feast of ultimate thanksgiving. We do not eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, or pecan pie. Instead, we receive the wholeness of God in the Eucharist.

Educators as Guides in Discernment

Educators wear many hats. We function as advocate, listening ear, disciplinarian, advisor, learner and many other blessed roles. One role that we do not consider very often is our role as a guide in a person’s discernment...
