Phi Chi Theta, A National Business Fraternity Comes to UD

The University of Dayton School of Business (SBA) stresses practical wisdom, combining the classroom and world together in a way that allows students to sharpen their skills and be career competitive after graduation.  The SBA encourages all students to get involved in business clubs, organizations, and fraternities as they provide valuable business insights while also allowing students to experience the spirit of service while having fun. Business fraternity specifically aims to give students experiential learning opportunities and real-world connections to help them gain insight into their career paths, allowing students to forge connections with other business students and alumni who work for or own companies around the globe.

The SBA currently has five business fraternities, including Epsilon Nu Tau, the nation’s first entrepreneurial fraternity whose "alpha" chapter is maintained at UD. However, in recent years the School of Business Administration has had record enrollment resulting in a shortage of fraternities to meet the current demand.

John Mack ('25) and Andrew Drecnik ('24) recognized the need for additional fraternities and found a solution in Phi Chi Theta. Alongside Janet Leonard, Director of The School of Business Administration's Center for Business Student Engagement, they worked step by step through the process of bringing Phi Chi Theta to the SBA. To date, they successfully recruited 40 members, and their national initiation is set for the end of April. At this time, they will officially be recognized as an established chapter of Phi Chi Theta and the SBA's sixth fraternity.

"John and Andrew have worked very hard to get this new fraternity established on campus this semester.  I have been very impressed with their organizational skills and ability to respond and take quick action on the many requests from the national organization and the necessary follow-up with all 40 UD students that will be inducted as the founding members of this group on April 22nd.  I believe their efforts will help make a significant positive difference in the lives of the many business students who will become part of this national organization now and in the years ahead." - Janet Leonard, Director of The School of Business Administration's Center for Business Student Engagement

Phi Chi Theta is a national professional fraternity providing an opportunity to develop and practice professional leadership skills and abilities to succeed in the business community. The fraternity provides a local and national network that shares resources, ideas, and concepts, instilling in its membership value that will enable participation in a rapidly changing world. It was founded on three pillars: professionalism, fraternity, and service. It was these pillars that drove Co-founders John Mack and Andrew Drecnik to pursue a Dayton chapter as they were drawn to the ability to enhance the professional development of current and future UD students.

Though new to the University of Dayton, Phi Chi Theta has 23,000 active members and 240,000 lifetime members, providing a robust, expansive network for new members to utilize.

"Phi Chi Theta offers interested students the opportunity to network with fellow passionate business school students, participate in engaging professional development opportunities, and impact the local Dayton community by participating in service activities." John Mack, Co-Founder of the SBA Phi Chi Theta Chapter

Phi Chi Theta was originally founded in 1924 as a women's organization before transitioning to being co-ed in the 1970s. Being an inclusive fraternity, it is still focused partially on women becoming involved in business. This emphasis, as well as the founding pillars, lay the basis for a business fraternity ready to succeed in modern society. The fraternity offers interested students the opportunity to network with fellow passionate business school students, participate in engaging professional development opportunities, and impact the local Dayton community by participating in service activities.

Phi Chi Theta is a member of and affiliated with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA), and the Professional Fraternity Executive Association (PFEA).
