University ROTC battalion to receive MacArthur Award
University of Dayton Fighting Flyers Army ROTC program will receive the 2022-23 MacArthur Award for being the top ROTC program in the Midwest during an 8 a.m. ceremony Friday, April 21, in the Presidential Suite in Kennedy Union.
The U.S. Army Cadet Command will send a team to present the award and President Eric F. Spina will deliver remarks.
“We are incredibly proud to be recognized as the No. 1 program in the 7th ROTC Brigade (Midwest),” said Lt. Col. Matthew Clementz, department chair and professor of military science. “It highlights our incredible relationship with the University of Dayton. The student population at UD is academically exemplary which allows us to commission exceptional lieutenants who have a foundation grounded in the Marianist tradition of leadership and service.”
Award criteria is based on cadets’ performance at the summer training session with cadets nationwide, and the quality of UD’s 2022 commissioned lieutenants (graduated students) compared to peers nationally.
“UD has a proud history of supporting Army officer training with one of the oldest programs in the country,” Clementz said. “This award is an indicator of the quality of students furthering their education at this great institution. Army ROTC provides our cadets full-tuition scholarships, paired with room and board support from the University, so cadets are able to focus on their studies without worrying about the cost.”
